A parent asks our group: When my three year old daughter has a meltdown in the car she gouges at the shoulder straps of her car seat and pulls a strap down to release a shoulder, subsequently pinning that arm down and rendering it immobile (all the while kicking and screaming). Beyond the safety issue of not being properly restrained while moving (I’m VERY diligent about following car seat installation and ensuring proper fit of both the seat and tightness of the straps), she is causing welts, bruises and small lacerations from her (always very short) nails. I typically pull the car over, crawl into the back of the car, release her, and work to calm her before she’s ready to get back into the seat safely. I’ve tried the Velcro shoulder pads (which are not recommended by the DOT), but little else aside from taking a break from the seat, as any interference with the seat itself will affect the integrity of the car seat. I may just have to accept the inconvenience of having to stop to keep her safe. Any suggestions?
