A parent perspective: Wow! The Gubernatorial Forum was certainly worth it, I feel like I have a much better picture of the nine candidates that were there. If you missed it, let me give you some highlights: • Ken Bennett (R)– AZ Sec. of State, thinks he can grow the economy 8%/year bennettarizona • Al Melvin (R)– wants lots of nuclear plants in AZ, doesn’t believe in the “climate change theory”, wants to give all parents an $8000 universal school voucher, pro-life, only supports traditional marriage, wants to be the tea party candidate of choice votealmelvin • Scott Smith (R)– I didn’t know much about him before this event, but he made lots of sense, he helped bring Apple manufacturing plant to the valley, as Mayor of Mesa had to solve many economic challenges, appreciated his thoughtful answers and wasn’t quick to give a sound bite that sounded great but wasn’t feasible votescottsmith • Frank Riggs (R)– from CA, had us stand up and say the Pledge and really wants us to stop calling people “latinos”, prefers we use “hispanic americans” instead riggsforazgov • Christine Jones (R)– was a lawyer for GoDaddy, has the 5 T’s economic plan (technology, training, transportation, tourism and taxation) christinejones • Fred DuVal (D) – former Chair of Board of Regents, worked for Clinton and Babbitt and oilman T. Boone Pickens. Supports Common Core and Medicaid Expansion…big focus on supporting education fred2014 • Doug Ducey (R)– AZ State Treasurer, former Cold Stone Creamery CEO, wants to eliminate income tax, proud to help defeat Prop. 204, opposes common core, Medicaid expansion, and Obamacare. dougducey • Barry Hess (L) – Author of the “Peace Monger”, thinks he can take us from “losers to leaders” by focusing on online schools and home schooling. Work history was quite vague, has also been involved in several multi-level marketing businesses. hessforgovernor • JL Mealer (I) – Intro was that he was “a life-long tinkerer” and mechanic turned developer. He claims we can solve all our problems by selling marijuana “and no, he doesn’t smoke it, his eyes are bloodshot because he rides a motorcycle”. He says we should pay all the teachers $100K jlmealer
