A parent writes, At the moment I have an appointment scheduled with a pediatric urologist for my three year old, intact son as per his pediatricians recommendation. The reason why I took him to his pediatrician in the first place was because he was ballooning, the balloon effect was staying even after urination (it did not return to its normal state) and he was crying with discomfort. At the pediatricians office his urine dip test tested positive for nitrites even though he had (and still doesnt have) any other UTI symptoms. What I was told is that there is a possibility that urine is staying trapped between the foreskin and the penis, and that this urine could create bacteria. Right now he is still taking antibiotics. It is hard to tell whether his improvement (he is no longer staying in a balloon state and he does not have discomfort) is from the medicine or because he has internally healed per the natural process. Im afraid to discontinue the antibiotic because of that nitrite factor, and havent been able to find anything that could explain that issue as being part of the natural process. Im hoping others could shed some light on this nitrite issue, and/or provide me some direction. He is my only son, and my goal is to be as informed as possible to prevent any ignorance from harming my son. I would also like to know if there is anything that we should be doing during this ballooning process to prevent urine build up (if it even does happen). Thank you so much for your help. Im at my wits end here.
