A peculiar underpass on the abandoned Rock Island in Kansas City. - TopicsExpress

A peculiar underpass on the abandoned Rock Island in Kansas City. Im familiar with the tied arch bridge design, but I dont think this was done with that in mind. That is usually done to keep the arch legs from spreading out and collapsing the arch, this looks more like it was added as an afterthought to prevent the inward collapse of the arch. It was done at the time the bridge was constructed, so I dont think it was a result of cracks forming or anything like that. Any thoughts?
