A pedestrian has died after he was struck by a car on the Stuart Highway in the middle of the night. The man, whom police have identified but are yet to notify next of kin, was hit by a car about 11pm on Wednesday near the Lake Bennett turnoff, 66km south of Darwin. Police are uncertain why the man was on the roadside and have been investigating. Territory Duty Superintendent Craig Ryan said: a motorist had found a male person lying beside the Stuart Hwy. The man appeared to have been hit by a motor vehicle. Police from Palmerston and Batchelor, along with medical team from Batchelor Clinic and Batchelor Fire and Emergency Group, attended the scene. On arrival, emergency services found a male person with serious injuries. The team tried their best to treat the man, but he died at the scene. The driver of the car which hit the deceased has identified himself to police. No charges have been laid. The driver has spoken to police and the driver will be spoken to again following on-scene investigation, Duty Super Ryan said. Major Crash investigators are at the scene and expect traffic restrictions to remain until at least 9am (Thursday). Only light vehicles can take a detour around the scene along the unsealed Marrakai Road. Trucks in both directions have been backed up since the accident. Motorists are asked to obey directions and drive with care.
