A peregrine hawk was hunting squirrels in Riverside Park this morning. I saw it twice: once when it was perching on a park bench, once when it flew right over my head and into a tree. A stupid squirrel practically ran up to it, and the hawk mantled and gaped, but did not attack--the squirrel was too high. It did stoop on a squirrel at the foot of the tree, but missed. I just stood there with my mouth hanging open, oddly tearing up. You beauty, I thought. You beauty. Nope, I didnt have my phone with me. On the one hand, bummer. On the other. . . .
