“A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates - TopicsExpress

“A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends. He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends,” (Pr. 16:28 & 17:9). What is referenced here is dissension, the ruin of close friendships, the sinful perversity of discussing with others the rumors, or even the negative truths we hear about others. Wisdom strictly forbids this behavior. It also warns against the serious danger of accepting such evil speech. We need to guard our tongues and close our mouths. We need also to guard our ears and open our mouths with words that convey, “Stop! That is not something I want to hear!” We could go so far as, “That gossip needs to stop right here, right now. Please do not continue spreading it.” (And, no! I don’t need to hear it so I can pray more intelligently for that person. A great deal of damage is done beneath that banner.)
