A pistol hot cup of rhyme. Swan Swan H from Lifes Rich Pageant, released 28 years and a few weeks ago. One of my favorite songs by REM, so unlike anything else in their vast portfolio. It’s the only song I’ve bothered to upload to my phone. Thematically it probably belongs on ‘Fables of the Reconstruction’. To me it’s an American history lesson, one I’ve been humming since the bloodshed shattered the fragile landscape in #Ferguson, Missouri two weeks ago. Not that anyone besides Michael Stipe really knows what he was singing about. From its opening riffs borrowed from ‘Working Class Hero’ to its surreal post-battlefield imagery, its a style and experiment that could only work well once. And it succeeded beautifully. So did this video, a clip shot for the 1987 documentary Athens, GA - Inside/Out. Please enjoy.
