A poem about a homeless ex-forces member by Sam Dewar Some people will never know. What goes on inside his head. The torment he has to live with. Hes hanging on by a thread. The things he has seen. What he has had to do. Finger on the trigger all the time. They dont know what hes been through. He comes back home. After 6 months at war. A shadow of his former self. He will struggle forever more. His family worry for him. He just sits and stares. Looking at nothingness. He thinks that no one cares. His face is gaunt. He remembers the desert. The pain it has caused Hes now Always alert. But there is one he confides in. She keeps him happy and sane. Around her he can just forget. Because she can see through the pain. So when you see the broken man. Just think before you jeer. Because that bottle is his friend. Its all that stops the fear. So when you see him on the street. Dressed in tattered camo gear. He fought for our country. Please do not sneer. He will always be a hero. Even without a home. So next time you see him. Dont leave him alone. Go up and say hello. And ask about his life. He might just surprise you. Because its not always strife. Some people will never know. That this young man cried. Out alone in the cold and wet. He just wishes he had died.
