A police officer who was shot in the eye by a man armed with an air rifle in Rugeley has begun documenting his road to recovery. Sgt Jon King from Cannock Police was rushed to hospital after being shot by a 34-year-old man in Wat Tyler Close on Sunday, October 19th. Sgt King, who has 26 years’ service, has now uploaded a video on YouTube to document his journey into the world of prosthetic eyes and blindness, having been shot with a gas powered hand gun with a hard rubber bullet. He said in the video: “It has basically smashed my eyeball. I’ve had surgery on it, but I’m completely blind in it. “I think I’m going to have a prosthetic eye. I’ve got an appointment in two weeks with the plastics team.” He will make another video in two weeks’ time updating people on his progress. Staffordshire Police went to the incident at around 7.30pm after a call from West Midlands Ambulance Service requesting assistance under the Mental Health Act. The armed man was arrested and taken into custody. Chief Inspector Stephen Morrey, local policing commander for the district, said at the time: “The Sergeant has done what the public would expect without hesitation, he should be commended for carrying out his duty in this way.” Jons positive attitude is truly remarkable. I am sure I speak for the entire police family in wishing him all the best on his road to recovery.
