A positive change to the USDA’s dietary guidelines may be afoot. A recent article in the Washington Post looks at the USDAs current panel discussions, which could result in the recommendation to eat less meat due to the growing environmental concerns around its carbon footprint. The panel’s recommendations may or may not make it into the final dietary guidelines, which will be released later this year (and are updated every five years). But if they do, it could have a significant impact on how much meat Americans eat, especially via federal purchasing programs (such as school lunches), which are greatly impacted by the guidelines.
