A positive message sent in from Graeme: I have lived most of my - TopicsExpress

A positive message sent in from Graeme: I have lived most of my life taking for granted the Union that has existed between our family of nations for centuries. Only a few years ago, this Scottish referendum was almost unthinkable, and a real chance of a yes vote even more so. Now we are facing the very real break-up of our family of nations. A union which gave the world the industrial revolution and helped spread Parliamentary democracy and enlightenment ideas, using Scottish thought and English influence, is now on the cusp of being destroyed for ever. I believe that there has been a lot of complacency on our side about Scotlands position in the Union, and for what it is worth, on all the nations and regions within the UK. Unfortunately, I feel that we have been far too negative in our argument. My perception of the Scots as a people is that they have always been at the forefront of reform and trying to make changes for the better, and if the message for the no side is one of negativity about the potential pitfalls of independence, I think it sounds more like a challenge to a lot of Scots than a warning. Although I agree that Salmonds promises of a land of milk and honey in the event of a yes vote are based largely on lies and false assumptions, People in Scotland are responding more to its message of hope than the No campaigns message of doom and gloom if people dont vote their way. I believe that the No Campaign needs to spread a more positive message. Recently, all the main parties have promised something akin to Devo-Max, and from what I have seen, many potential yes voters have reacted to this with scepticism at what looks like a cynical and desperate attempt to claw back votes that they had taken for granted before. I can understand this, but I have every reason to believe that Devo-Max, and a more federal union for the entire UK is not just possible, but inevitable. It has been made absolutely clear to London that the present arrangement is no longer satisfactory to the people of Scotland. Westminster corruption and other temporary factors may be the driving force behind these feelings, but the promise of reform, having been made, will have to be kept, because all the main UK parties know that if this promise is broken, Salmond and his cohorts will be back next time and the majority for yes will be unassailable if these promises are betrayed. I believe that we can and will have a federal union in the UK if there is a no vote, and if so, Scotland will once again have been in the vanguard of change for the better for people throughout the whole of the UK, not just in Scotland. People say this could be Scotlands last chance for independence, I say this could be Scotlands last chance to remain a powerful and influential voice for being a positive influence within the UK and perhaps the wider world. Scotland has made a point about the way Britain is governed abundantly clear, we can make a better country together, but only if Scotland stays within the Union. Its influence to make positive change for all will be greatly diminished if Scotland places itself outside this great Union and it will be to the detriment of all, not just the Scots themselves. Join us Scotland, stay with us and let us make a better society and a United Kingdom together.
