The city coroner to-day held an inquest on the body of an abandoned child, which was recently found in a paddock at Red- fern. Dr Dixson said that he first saw the child at the Benevolent Asylum. It was then two or three weeks old. There was a purple discoloration round the neck at the back part of the head and the upper part of the chest, due to effusion of blood. There was also some excoriation of the skin on both sides of the neck. The child was in .a serious condition. The marks might have been caused by a piece of calico, which had been tied tightly round the neck. The child had the appearance of having been strangled. It died on Monday afternoon. Dr. Palmer, who made a post mortem examination, said that death was due to the effects of strangulation. The jury recorded a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.
