A preliminary fieldwork finding of the “Southern Catholics,” the disappearing sub-minority group, in the shadow of the two majority cultures in the deep south of Thailand. The shadow of the Islam culture has covered almost a hundred percent of this area where Buddhist culture belongs to a small demographic minority group, on the other. However, this article will shed the light on the different picture from those. As the preliminary finding from conducting fieldwork under fire in the three southernmost provinces which I had done between 2009 – 2011 found that there is a disappearing group, namely, the Catholics – a group of a very small number as I call “sub-minority group”. The finding shows that this group had been established its communities for more than a half century, practiced Catholic culture, and remained living in this area even the current deadly conflict between Islam insurgence and Buddhist state are arising. Furthermore, some Catholics’ survival strategic negotiations for living in the deadly conflict society will be presented. Keywords: Islam culture, Buddhism culture, Catholic culture, Deadly conflict zone, Disappearing group, Southern Thailand Violence ข้อค้นพบเบื้องต้นจากภาคสนามว่าด้วย “คาทอลิกภาคใต้” คนกลุ่มน้อยนิดที่หายไปใต้ร่มเงาสองวัฒนธรรมใหญ่ในสามจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ ประเทศไทย พัทธ์ธีรา นาคอุไรรัตน์ วิทยาลัยสหวิทยาการ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ ประเทศไทย E-mail: rung_4567@hotmail บทคัดย่อ จังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ของไทยถูกรับรู้อย่างกว้างขวางว่าเป็นดินแดนแห่งความไม่สงบและความขัดแย้งอย่างรุนแรงถึงตายนับตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2547 เป็นต้นมา อีกภาพหนึ่งที่เกือบจะผูกขาดภาพลักษณ์ของดินแดนนี้ คือ วัฒนธรรมของศาสนาอิสลามที่สถาปนาเป็นวัฒนธรรมหลักของคนไทยกลุ่มใหญ่เชื้อสายมลายู และถูกรับรู้อีกด้านหนึ่งด้วยว่าเป็นปรปักษ์กับรัฐไทยซึ่งคนส่วนใหญ่ปฏิบัติวัฒนธรรมพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท บทความนี้ต้องการนำเสนอให้เห็นภาพของคนอีกกลุ่มวัฒนธรรมหนึ่งที่หายไปจากการรับรู้ของผู้คนทั่วไปแต่เป็นกลุ่มที่ผู้วิจัยได้พบจากการทำงานวิจัยภาคสนามในสามจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ท่ามกลางสถานการณ์ความรุนแรงระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2552-2554 กล่าวคือ ภาพของคนไทยกลุ่มที่มีจำนวนน้อยนิดมาก นับถือศาสนาคาทอลิก ปฏิบัติวิถีวัฒนธรรมตามแบบอย่างของศาสนาคาทอลิก บางชุมชนดำรงอยู่ในจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้มานานกว่าครึ่งศตวรรษและยังคงดำรงชีวิตอยู่ในปัจจุบันท่ามกลางความขัดแย้งอย่างรุนแรงระหว่างคนสองกลุ่มใหญ่ และนำเสนอ “วิธีการ” บางประการที่ชาวคาทอลิกใช้ต่อรองเพื่อดำรงอยู่ท่ามกลางบริบททางสังคมความรุนแรงถึงตาย
