A proposal to consider making Spanish and English our co-equal - TopicsExpress

A proposal to consider making Spanish and English our co-equal national languages. Don’t laugh. Please. Think of the time all of us would save not having to ‘marque el dos’ or whatever when we encounter those cleverly and deviously growing telephone access points some old pharts like me used to just punch ‘0’. I live on Julia Puta Avenue (she was some early 20th century weight builder suffragette who donated $50,000 to the local government in 1928. BTW) In my case our local street sign would not need to be changed. It already says it all. Other countries have tried this. Yes. They have. Many of them lasted through 11 November, 1918. Think about it. Forced English is not fair to our many Hispanics who have not bothered to suffer through learning one of the most ridiculous and stupid languages in the world: my language, American English. Imagine if you can [is the term ‘emphasize’?] our Hispanic Papi drooling at the Chevy dealership window for his lusted ¿NOVA? I knew a fine young Anglo man from Montreal. The Maple Leaf is dual lingo, recall. I don’t think he spoke one word of Voltaire or De Gaulle or BIC or Aerospatiale. Not sure, mind you, but I don’t think he knew sh.t of Parisian, Provencal, Midi, Champagnois or quebequois. Truly a pity. He spoke perfect received English a la Canadian. And, no, there were no obstreperous ‘ehs’ plagueing his Anglo. But he and the Maple Leaf Forever continue doing quite fine, thank you. On the other side of the coin (many such coins abound, alas) we review the demise of Emperor Karl’s Austro-Hungarian Empire. They had more than a few national languages. Unfortunately, Austria bit the bullet in 1918. The rest of the place, with all its wondrous and proud native tongues survived. We now know some of them as Bosnia and as Herzogovina and as Serbia, and as Croatia, and as Slovakia. I’m for dual languages. What do you monolinguists think? Eh? [SAT, my Canadian friend]
