A really funny guy in his 40s, embarking on parenthood for the first time, works at the local bike shop and is a prodigious buyer of books. His wife is from Mauritius and her first language is French; he came in looking for childrens books in French (Asterix etc) to help the new baby grow up bilingual.I didnt have much in stock but gave him an old illustrated French dictionary & promised to give him first dibs on anything that came in. His wife is a scientist with much greater earning capacity than his; shortly hes going to cut back work to 2 days a week. I recited him a couple of lines from The Bastard From The Bush, the indescribably filthy doggerel attributed to Henry Lawson, .....would you let a woman keep you/And give up work for good?/And the Bastard From The Bush replied/ My bloody oath I would. So we had a good laugh about this highly popular male aspiration and he signed off by saying Im paying the price for 20 years as a surf bum. Caught some lovely waves though.
