A recent PBS series highlighted the story of how Chicago was lifted by 10 feet in the mid-nineteenth-century, in order to build the first sewer system in America. Here is a clip about how nineteenth century technology was used to lift buildings, blocks, and neighborhoods. The work was funded by private property owners and public funds. Some called it crazy, but it happened.
