A reduction in the police budget for 2014 by 13bn is hardly the right step to take at a time when the crime rate in the country is rising and the 2015 elections approaching. Except for the endemic corruption within the police system. In a democratic setting like ours, the issue of Nigeria Police Force for effective and efficient policing should be positively addressed. Reducing crime should be a government imperative. Nigeria Police Force needs new strategic planning in view of the threat from terrorism that is becoming more diverse and complex in its nature. Police authorities must be forced to be financial transparent. The current corrupt and opaque accounting system should be overhauled. Modern policing has gone beyond carrying AK47 rifles or mounting road blocks as often seen in Nigeria. In developed societies, it is massively driven by High-Tech, evident in CCTV cameras mounted at strategic locations in streets, use of Telecommunication gadgets, intelligence gathering, and keeping accurate data on residents etc. It also involves patrolling strategies that offer re assurance to the community, especially targeting crime hot spots and known offenders. Nigeria therefore, has to change with times by unbundling the police. This is the only way to service delivery and better funding of the police can be achieved.
