A registered psychologist is prohibited by law to treat family - TopicsExpress

A registered psychologist is prohibited by law to treat family members or friends. The law states I cant treat people I have a personal relationship or history with. If we are FB friends then I know you personally (and youre special to me!). I can promote mental health care, as I often do, but not create personal treatment plans. This is a good thing :-). It means that objective treatment plans are created for clients with an absence of personal knowledge or agendas in those plans. There is to be no personal or financial gain from family or friends. All treatment plans must meet the criteria of rigorous scientifically tested and approved treatments set out by Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Registered health workers are answerable to AHPRA in the event of adverse or misleading outcomes from treatments. It takes years to qualify through learning from recognised institutions to even use the term psychology but only one questionable outcome to loose that privldge. The main point of which is to do no harm, knowingly or unknowingly. If any information Ive provided made you feel you would benefit from seeing a psychologist go to the Australian Psychological Society (APS) website and search for someone near you who equally must value a commitment to the professional ethics and policies set down by APHRA and maintain the added standards set down by the APS. Hope this helps. xxx
