A remote part of the Murchison Mountains (visible from Te Anau) is home to the last wild population of takahe. These critically endangered native birds face a fresh wave of predators in the form of stoats due to bumper seed production in our beech forests. Fiordland DOC is racing to extend its stoat-trapping network across 51,000 hectares of Fiordland National Park. There are already 4000 predator traps, and staff want to set another 1000 before Christmas. Lets hope they can. From tonights TV news:
