A returned message to a manager in the Houston airport system that wants to install a position like mine - the one I created. Im consulting him for free to propel my profession. Lets hope it works out for him. Here it is... Paul, I sat down with the Director of Risk Management – Mr. Steve Varvel – and we ran some numbers. He calculated that the direct costs avoided over the past year, from one AT (that’s me) was $175,000. He believes that the number is conservative and that it is probably much higher. What he did was took the average payout/patient to commercial facilities and multiplied that by the number of patients that I see/year. He pays out $175 per appointment on the average. Last year, I had 1000 appointments which was a down year. Most years, I see more. The ROI was > 2.5. These numbers do not reflect indirect costs avoided. Indirect costs are greater than direct costs. So, let’s say we take a conservative multiple of 1.1, then in indirect costs we avoided 1.1 x 175,000 = 192,500. Direct costs avoided + Indirect costs avoided = 175,000 + 192,500 = $367,500 total costs avoided last year. Although, my director admits that he does not pay as much attention to indirect costs as he does the concrete numbers. Hope you have a great one.
