Memo on Music: A Brief Pause (2014), Performed by Shahrzad Sepanlou By ComposerPA (Payman Akhlaghi) The song Rebellion (2014), from A Brief Pause, the latest release by Ms. Shahrzad Sepanlou, is a welcome pleasure for its bright harmonic and timbral world, modern tangible lyrics, refreshing melodic and rhythmic treatment of the words, and to state the obvious, the sheer beauty of the singers voice and performance style. The album overall sounds to be a deliberate attempt at pushing the boundaries of the pop medium; its a convincing accomplishment, and on a purely timbral level, a de facto consistent aural delight. Ms. Sepanlou is a gifted Iranian-American singer based in LA. In her recent choices, she has opted to walk that risky line between the accessibility of Persian pop and the sophistication of modern pop idioms, at times employing phrase asymmetries and rubato renditions that overlap those of art songs, with courage, and with encouraging success. Her fluent and seemingly effortless executions are evidence of natural expressive skills and genuine appreciation for style and musical language.
