A rough drive in both directions today but it was worth the trip to go to the ConcertOPERA, Philadelphia production of Andrea Chenier starring the fabulous Christina Lamberti as Maddalena, Jesús Daniel Hernández (who might be familiar to DC audiences as a graduate of the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist program) in the title role with Daniel Oh as Gerard. Christina and Mr. Hernandez gave chills in their duets; a beautiful blend of voices both with thrilling top register. Christina was so moving beautifully nuanced during La Mamma Morta. Poor Mr. Hernandez was singing with a fever but gave a stirring performance nonetheless. Mr. Ohs voice is a force of nature; huge, dark, laser focused; I cannot recall a better performance of Nemico della patria. The orchestra did a wonderful job under Maestro Yoonhak Baek who, while sensitive to the singers, sometimes had trouble pulling the orchestra back enough not to cover the singers (no pit made this a challenge) although it was NEVER an issue with the three main leads - voice to spare from those three. Bravi Tutti!
