A rough translation below....Shaykh Waseem Ahmed. Traditional circles (halaqāt) of knowledge return to Somalia after a long absence due to the war within the country. They are headed by the scholars from Sufi backgrounds. These have been the essential means by which the people attained knowledge of Islam over the centuries. They have produced many scholars and men of influence/Sufi Shaykhs who fulfill the needs of the society. Shaykh Uthman Hadagh (sp?) At the age of 72, who is a leading Sufi Shaykh, scholar & from the Idrisi Tariqa is in charge of one of the most famous religious centres. It had been established for more than a century now. Shaykh Uthman says that the halaqāt are the only message to learn sound religious knowledge in Somalia. There are three areas of study; 1 sciences of the shariah.. Shafii fiqh, tafseer hadith etc 2 sciences of the Arabic language, grammar, rhetoric literature etc 3 the spiritual sciences, tasawwuf, spiritual nurturing and the tariqa Shaykh Mahmoud, a 35 year old teacher at one of the halaqāt, says that teachers often direct students to master a particular subject if they see signs of his proficiency. Some students are given certificates and are encouraged to continue their studies at university level. Shaykh Hasan, a 45 year old teacher, says that there are only two conditions to study. The first is to memorise the Quran and the second is to have a good demeanour. During their spare time students do their litanies and chant Islamic songs(nasheed) together. And sing odes in praise of The Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him, which revives their spirit to learn. These activities take place in areas or masajid adjacent to the takāyā where the halaqāt are held, depending on the Sufi order(Tariqa). The Qadiri Tariqa and the Idrisi tariqa have regular activities and gatherings. There are also gatherings of celebrating the birth of the The Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him. Events are held to commemorate the great Sufi Shaykhs and mention their pious lives and devotion to serving Islam. Students are given licences to teach after completion of their studies. This licence incorporates two main aspects; to teach what they have learnt , and to educate and nurture their own students according to the Sufi order they are affiliated with, by giving litanies; supplications and prayers upon the Prophet, as well as other Spiritual exercises. The graduates do not carry official certificates, but are known through their teaching abilities and the shuyookh they studied under. For this reason they are considered the main point of reference for religious learning and guidance in Somalia and the African region in general since hundreds of years till our times. video via shaykh muhammad al yaqoubi (hafidhullah)
