A sample problem the students will work on tomorrow for order of operations: "Twenty stocks are shared among stockholders. There are five stockholders that want them; the bureaucrats are trying to pull them aside. Each bureaucrat can pull away one stockholder. Before the ten bureaucrats pull away the five stockholders, Mike Tyson punches seven of them out. Write an algebraic expression that illustrates how many stocks each stockholder gets." The answer: 20 / [5 - (10 - 7)] = 10 stocks I find that the sillier the word problem, the more comfortable students are working on it. I want them to enjoy learning math.
