Information is power An excerpt- The first ever case of Tar ball deposition on the beaches in India was noticed on Vagator beach in 1970 by former National Institute of Oceanography Director Dr. NK Pannikkar. The phenomenon had occurred during South West Monsoon in Goa. The next year, NIO scientists again discovered large quantities of tar balls on Calangute, Baga and Vagator beaches prompting it to look into the whole aspect of marine pollution and how Goa gets affected by the onslaught of tar balls along with the onset of monsoons every year. The next years onwards researchers simultaneously studied the chemical properties and the abundance of tar balls during 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1984, 1988 and 1993. The studies have now gone just beyond the domain of studying what is the composition of tar balls. Instead they have emphatically established where they come from and given a broad indicator of who could be the culprits. thegoan.net/Goa/Cover-Story/Tarnished-Truths/08111.html
