A short one, but trying to beat the President... Hmmmmmm Immigration Reform….. A Bleeding Heart Liberal’s Perspective It appears there is going to be some kind of presidential announcement this evening regarding immigration reform. I’m still in disbelief that we have to “reform” immigration in a country that was founded on freedom. And how about that Lady Liberty? It’s a good thing she’ll drown soon from global warming and the melting of the ice-caps. Last time I looked at her she was blushing. Her insignia says: Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door. Ain’t that a laugh? What it doesn’t say is only if you are the same color as me, and speak the same language as me. I wonder how many of us would be against immigration reform if we were talking about our Anglo friends up in Canada. My guess, none! You see, they look like us, they talk like us (except they say “eh” way too much). My vote is for amnesty and I hope the Prez has the gumption to do it. These are hard-working, good people, looking for a better life for themselves and their families. The criminals are that way because we force them to be. We don’t allow them to hold a legal job, pay taxes, and be productive citizens. What about healthcare? What about healthcare! We are already paying for illegal immigrants’ healthcare, why not make them legal and apply the same rules for the affordable care act (aka Obamacare) to them as we do to the rest of us? Illegal people aren’t going without healthcare, they are being treated at non-profit, and not-for-profit hospitals where they cannot be turned down. Some pay, some do not, just like legal citizens do. We need to stop being so egocentric and look at the world with a more global view. I’m not saying we should just open the gates and let anyone in, but we should legalize the people that are living here before we try to slam the gates shut. These are our neighbors, not our enemies. It reminds me of a Robert Frost writing, “The Mending Wall,” where Frost says, “good fences make good neighbors.” Why? My neighbors have a fence, but that’s not what makes them a good neighbor. What makes them a good neighbor is they care about us, and other people. There may be a fence to keep us, or others out of the backyard, or to keep the dogs in, but they are always welcome through the front door. I feel the same way toward our friends to both the North and the South. I personally have no desire to put a fence up to keep either out. Somewhere in my family there were immigrants. At least four of them. I have no idea why they came to the U.S., but they did, and I thank them for that. I don’t know that any of them were persecuted in their countries of origin. I don’t know that they came here legally, or illegally, but, I’m glad they came. Let’s open our minds, and hearts a little bit and welcome those that want to live the dream that we are able to live, no matter how difficult it is, for us, or them.
