A short story by Adam Duresky. Read it! I ascended the stairway to the third floor of the complex. Turning right, I beheld a poorly lit hallway which seemed to stretch on miles. The corridor seemed to radiate anxiety and fear and I could feel the tension oozing from under the many closed doors that lined the hallway. I retrieved my map from my pack and unrolled it before me. It was an old and tattered thing, tearing at the edges and dotted with coffee stains. If the charts were read correctly, my destination should be 20 yards in front of me on the left. I cautiously began walking down the corridor, anxiously looking through the windows of closed doors. The sights I beheld were gruesome to say the least, poor civilians lay haphazardly upon desks, others covering their faces in horror. As I made my way further down the hallway, my sense of dread continued to grow. What foul horrors await me I thought to myself as I approached my would be target. After another couple of steps, I arrived outside the door. The window was blocked and there seemed to be no light emanating from the room. I fetched a scroll from my pack and unrolled it on the floor. The scroll was given to me by a wise and mysterious wizard. He warned me of a great demon that resided in this very room. The beast was named -rather notoriously- The Final. The scroll gave instructions on how to defeat the ancient enemy of man. After reading the scroll, I replaced it in my pack and stood before the door. I arranged my armor plating and drew my pencil -The Finals only weakness- and tentatively gripped the door handle. The door opened with barely a push, giving way to a grisly sight. Row after row of desks were arranged in the room, each with a mathematical calculating device, foreign to my native lands. However, I noticed that some of my comrades had also taken up the grand quest as they sat, ready to do glorious battle, in the back of the room. I made my way to the back and selected a desk. Minutes later, a forlorn bell rang slowly in the distance. A signal. . .for the battle to begin.
