A short video I took last week whilst aboard paddle steamer - TopicsExpress

A short video I took last week whilst aboard paddle steamer Waverley, showing her triple expansion steam engine. It produces 2,100 ihp (indicated horsepower) @ 58 rpm. She uses 700 litres of fuel oil/hr at around 14 knots, which is nearly twice as much as the diesel jet boat I use to skipper which had 2,000 hp and did around 20 knots. Pure electric propulsion is around three times as efficient as a diesel engine, having an equivalent electric mpg of a similar factor when compared to diesel. Whilst electric propulsion existed before the diesel engine, it is only now it is coming into its own, as the improvements in batteries and control systems now it viable. Note the washing machine effect through the portholes in the background, part way through the video, as they look out at the paddle wheels.
