A significant percentage of head and neck cancer patients treated - TopicsExpress

A significant percentage of head and neck cancer patients treated with radiation will develop painful mouth sores known as oral mucositis. These can affect eating and drinking and can be debilitating. According to results of a study presented at the 54th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology, an oral rinse containing the antidepressant doxepin significantly reduced pain in patients with acute oral mucositis caused by radiation therapy, with or without chemotherapy. After the study was completed, 64% of patients elected to continue doxepin. Doxepin oral rinse is a new standard of care for oral mucositis, according to lead study author Robert Miller, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Ask our pharmacist for more information.
