A slightly irksome Tuesday challenge, and a difficult decision for someone who has always worked in magazines and wishes people still bought them in great numbers, but, having bought Radio Times pretty much every single week for 25 years, since the age of 11 (when you also had to buy TV Times separately), this week I leave it on the shelf. Purely financial logic, now they expect £2 a week it no longer even begins to offer any value for money, we can get TV guides anywhere at a button press. All their text is instantly recycled by every single media outlet within minutes, and their TV guides are very poor. I want to support woodpulp mags, but theyve taken the piss too often. Still, itll be tough, just for habits sake. Also, I cant afford to spend money on Viz any more. From shelf, to bathroom, maybe a giggle or two, then the bin. Its too frequent, too expensive. So Private Eye is the last periodical standing on my budget. Sad day for someone who devoted my life to mag publishing a long time ago.
