A small business and a big business decided to have a competitive boat race on the Yarra River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance and by the big day they were as ready as they could be. The small business team won by two boat lengths. Afterwards, the big business team became discouraged and corporate management decided the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found. After a team of executives was set up to investigate the problem, they concluded the problem was the small business team had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, whereas they had 1 person rowing and 8 people steering. After a savvy restructure that created 4 Steering Managers, 3 Area Steering Managers, and 1 Staff Steering Manager, they arrived at the next race flush with confidence. The small business team won by four lengths. The big business laid off the rower for poor performance, sold all of the paddles, cancelled all canoe investments and distributed the money saved as bonuses to the senior executives.
