A sneak Peak at Summer 2014! Choose your workshops and be ready to register on our new website next week! Session 1: July 7-11, ages 6-12 Morning session: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory: Childrens Theater Workshop with Jackie Walsh Afternoon session: Polymer Clay & Color Creations with Kathleen DeQuence Anderson In the morning children will explore and practice all the elements of theater production in this action-packed week. This experience will be rich from page to stage: with casting, practicing lines, developing characters, learning stage terms, and costume and set design! All in one week-- Amazing! Open to all levels of experience. In the afternoon children will delve into the principles and elements of design using paper collage and polymer clay! Students will produce a personal collage story board, to develop individual artistic ideas. They will go on to create sculptures using the versatile and exciting polymer clay, learning techniques along the way! Come learn and play with this master educator and artist! Session 2: July 14-18, ages 6-12 Morning session: Create a Play: 100% Original Theater with Emma Weinstein Afternoon session: Print-Making Adventures with Hayley Wood Discover the age-old art of Printmaking without a press! Children will learn to use inked objects, gelatin plate prints, block printing, silk screen making, stencil design, and monotypes. Children will be encouraged to think through an idea, learn a series of steps, and create multiples, from the initial drawing of a design, to the final print! We will play with different papers and fabrics and use inks and paints to create colorful, layered images. Children should bring one or more t-shirts to print on to make some wearable art! Jump into a fast-paced workshop in acting, directing and play writing where each child will create his or her own original play and have it performed on the last day! Children will be lead in theater games and skill-building activities while working together to create original short performances. The best part is that all children will get to act and direct as well as make props and costumes. Join this week for lots of fun and a great cooperative experience. Session 3: July 21-25, Ages 5-10 Morning session: Wild Animal Masks with Ezzell Floraniña Afternoon session: Mem Fox Storybook Theater with Tony Jones Wild Animal Mask-Making – Real or Imaginary! How about a Bear with horns? Or a Fox with antennae? Maybe you can imagine an animal from long long ago that had a beak as long as your arm and floppy ears! Well, come join us to make a mask that you might wear like a cap on your head or over your eyes. Use mixed media to make several masks, where ever your imagination can take you, we can make a mask to go there too! Mem Fox Story Book Theater - We will explore two books by the Australian author, Mem Fox: Koala Lou and Whoever You Are. Exploring reading concepts through theater games, students will create a performance piece to these two books to share with their parents and friends. We will create visual, sound, and dramatic effects to reinforce the authors vision, while creating a synthesized production of her imaginative and fun books! Bring your creativity! Session 4: July 28 - Aug. 1, Ages 7-12 Morning session: Air Dry Clay Dragons & Gargoyles with Polly Anderson Afternoon session: The Art of Improv with Tony Jones Learn sculpting techniques with self hardening clay while creating ‘life like’ dragons and gargoyles. Self hardening clay handles much like regular clay, but, it air dries. It is a great clay to have available if you do not have access to a kiln and allows you to work with an armature that does not need to be removed. The finished pieces are not food safe like kiln fired clay with a glaze, but, it works well for sculpture, and when dry, can be spray painted or painted with acrylic paints/craft paints. Bring your imagination and knowledge of folklore, beasts, and magical creatures to create your own mythical sculptures. Children will learn step-by-step processes to make these sculptures come alive! Whether your creatures are scary or silly or something in between, every one will a great time expressing their ideas in this 3-D format. Calling all kids who like to move, think on their toes, make funny jokes, invent characters, and play! While this workshop involves the art of Improv, unscripted theater, you dont have to have any experience, just a willingness to be a little goofy and try something new. Tony will lead the group in lots of hilarious and skill-building games and warm-ups to help children learn to think and respond like great improvisers. As the course progresses, students will gain ease and daring as they design an interactive experience for the final day. Audience participation will be a big part of the act! Bring your creativity and an appetite for some (supported) theatrical risk-taking!
