A snippet!! .......from They lived in Africa by Jean Coulter. According to this book there was a tollgate at the Kei crossing and in 1903 at least 3000 wagons crossed the bridge. The tollkeeper however became somewhat confused when, about the same time, he was confronted with the first motor car, a Lorraine Dietrich, travelling from East London to Umtata. The car was driven by Mr William Grassam Cooper. Utterly confused as to how to charge for this type of wagon which did not appear on his list of toll fees the tollkeeper eventually let it proceed free of charge!! :) :)
