A social welfare nonprofit is a particular breed of nonprofit that is supposed to promote (as one would expect) social welfare — Kentucky Opportunity Coalition is one of these groups. By law, its primary purpose cannot be political. Kentucky Opportunity Coalition has paid for about 12,000 ads in the states Senate race. Only the campaigns for Sen. Mitch McConnell and Alison Lundergan Grimes have run more. Every single one of those ads has specifically mentioned one of the candidates by name. Campaign finance reformers say the Kentucky Opportunity Coalition is the epitome of a “dark money” nonprofit that has little or nothing to do with promoting social welfare. “This group for all practical purposes is simply an arm of Sen. McConnell’s campaign,” Fred Wertheimer, president of the advocacy group Democracy 21, told us.
