A step in the wrong direction ..... Victoria’s new Code of Practice for Breeding Businesses includes a number of serious and alarming welfare issues for animals... Some of which include: - considering it “humane” to kill a dog or cat by hitting it with a hammer; - allowing pens with flooring made almost entirely from wire; - permitting breeding between second-generation related animals; - no longer requiring vet checks to ensure animals are fit for breeding; - allowing breeders to declare an animal fit for sale, rather than vets; - not adequately ensuring that breeding and rearing establishments have sufficient agreements with, and 24-hour access to, veterinary services; - no maximum breeding age or period that an animal could be bred from, meaning these animals can potentially spend their entire lifetime confined to breeding establishments; - maximums litters numbers for females would be increased while males would have no maximum number; - an individual animal with a heritable defect can continue to be bred from. Many of the above listed points would, if they were to occur outside of a registered breeding business would be considered as acts of negligence and cruelty to animals. So why is it ok for breeding businesses, "backyard breeders" to do it???
