A story... I remember vividly where I was on this day 50 years ago. I was attending Cambridge (many of you dont know, thats where I got my first degree). I was sitting in class and all of a sudden a radio broadcast burst across the public address system. It was a news program announcing that President Kennedy had been shot. I remember being fond of the Kennedys because my mom liked them and I adored my mom. She had good taste and judgement. And she looked a lot like Jackie O. And I might have had a crush on Caroline, Im three years older than her. I remember being stunned, as was the whole class. The day blurred on and we found out he had died. It was around the time we went into the cafeteria for lunch. I felt sick, couldnt eat my tuna sandwich. So I gave it away. It was the only time I ever remember not eating my lunch in elementary school. And yes, it was a tuna sandwich, I remember. The following days were consumed with watching television shows and listening to news broadcasts about the assassination, the apprehension of Lee Harvey Oswald, his assassination, that picture of him being shot by Jack Ruby, and John and Caroline walking along with the horse drawn cart at funeral procession. I remember my moms little AM radio on the kitchen counter, always on and listening to the news after the assassination. Its the same radio that a year and a half later during breakfast told me about Nat King Coles death, another death that saddened my mother. She was always such a happy person, I think the few sad times really stuck with me. I remember this day fifty years ago. It doesnt mean my memory is good, it just means Im old. Scot PS it was Cambridge elementary school. And the degree was 6th grade.
