A story from my friend Japhia Life: A Rapper That is a Christian, - TopicsExpress

A story from my friend Japhia Life: A Rapper That is a Christian, but Not a Christian Rapper(Taken from a post about the same subject on my page - **EDITED FOR BREVITY AND CONTINUITY** ): JaphiaLife: I had a fanbase before I stepped foot in the Christian market. Ask the ppl who signed me to Beatmart Records. They wanted to sign me after my first project Pages of Life came out in the hip hop market, but I ended up doing the deal a month before I dropped my second project Hells Diary: The Healing LP. Secondly, the only reason I even signed with Beatmart is because of the track record Todd Collins had with running Gotee Records, a label who was known for having artists who were Christians that just made positive music like Grits, Relient K, Family Force 5, etc. The reason Beatmart even got distribution from Sony/BMG is because they played my album for them at the meeting. Sony looked at them and said Thats not Christian rap, thats legit hip hop music. Lets do the deal ASAP. So make sure u know what ur talking about befor u start making claims about my music. Thirdly, never compare me to Lecrae. I been on what Im on since day one. Ive always represented my faith and my brand properly, across the board from the Christian market to the Hip Hop market.... A lot of Christian rappers including Lecrae have switched up their stance in my opinion, for whatever reasons. And I say that in love because Lecrae is a dear friend of mines. But be very careful when u start to lump artists like myself into that category. I never changed. I will be honest and transparent when I say that early on after Pages of Life and being a young artist I was overwhelmed be the pressures that existed in the chh market to prove that my music was Christian enough and thats one of the reasons Hells Diary sounds the way it does, as well as some of the mixtapes, and even Fountain of Life to a degree. But as I grew up and came into my own as an artist I stopped feeling the need to have to prove how Christian I was in my music. I dont even share that with a lot of ppl fam. And its actually very sad that its like that in the chh market. Yo Japhia, thanks for sharing this fam. Very helpfu and insightful.
