A study by Stephanie A. Wiley reaffirms previous research that connects experiences such as police contacts, arrest and incarceration to stigmatization. The results suggest that “stop and frisk” contacts lead to greater delinquency. The study is particularly relevant in the context of the Qld government’s tough on juvenile crime campaign. The study indicates that the policing practices observed disproportionately impacted upon ethnic minorities. The study also suggests that the harm may outweigh the benefit where there is collaboration between schools and the justice system to provide early intervention for problem youth.
