A succession of leaks has shown deep rifts between the parties negotiating the deal, and set off a tide of criticism. This latest leak is no exception. US-based environmental groups, including the World Wildlife Fund, issued a joint analysis saying the chapter was an “unacceptable rollback of previous commitments”, and that the environmental protections it imposed were “virtually meaningless”. In an analysis published online, New Zealand law professor Jane Kelsey says the environmental-protection obligations in the treaty are “weak” and “unenforceable”.
