A sweet old man wheeled up to me in his motorized chair and asked, Does your mother know youve snuck out and are up here reading? I grinned and said, Oh its not her Im hiding from. I have 3 boys at a day camp right now. And Im about to make my weekly trip to the grocery store to reload the fridge for them. This is my moment of peace. Im having a cup of coffee and stealing away in a corner at Barnes and noble with my book. But instead I used my moment to visit with an old lonely man about his grandkids and about my boys learning to make soap at the French Museum and he told me all about how he did that and much more for real as a kid. And I feel on some level, I had showed up for a coffee date I had planned all along.
