A talk by Thomas Miller Klubock, Professor of History, University of Virginia. Thursday, October 2, 2014 6:00-7:30PM Goldwin Smith 142 This talk will examine the varieties of Mapuche politics in Chile during the twentieth century, narrating the history of the famous Ralco community in Alto Bío Bío, whose 1997 conflict with the transnational energy company ENDESA was one of the foci of the contemporary Mapuche conflict. It uses the case of Ralco to illustrate the different geographical and historical scales at which ethnic identities and politics have been produced, and explores the current amnesia and historiographical lacunae that inform discussions of the Mapuche movement. Forgetting histories of revolutionary militancy during the 1930s and 1970s, and historical modes of solidarity with non-Mapuche campesinos, has been key to the ways in which the contemporary Mapuche politics of territory, community, and ethnicity have been articulated during the contemporary neoliberal moment and ongoing transition to democracy in Chile. Co-Sponsored by CLASS (Cornell Latin America Student Society) and the Institute for Comparative Modernities (ICM)
