A team of Chinese and American researchers have come one step closer to understanding sleeps complex role in memory formation. They observed, in mice, that sleep after motor learning, promotes the formation of postsynaptic dendritic spines on a subset of branches of individual layer V pyramidal neurons. When deprived of sleep, the mices brains are unable to complete this branch-spine formation, thus impeding the learning-dependent synapses storage.
