A team of our Youth and Junior boxers travelled to Wales on Friday 23 May to compete in the Howard Winstone Cup, a dual established to celebrate the arrival of the Queens baton relay in Wales ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and in memory of one of the greats of Welsh boxing, Howard Winstone. James Probert (WAL) v Harry Peacock (SCO) - Scotland Loss 2-1 The two lads met in a cracking contest in the GB schoolboy finals were Harry came out on top and this bout didnt disappoint. James started the quicker of the two edging the first round but Harry came strong halfway through the second and dominated the third, but it was James who got the nod. Micky McDonagh (WAL) v Ryan Ball (SCO) - Scotland Win 3 -0 Ryan was the cleaner puncher throughout contest, confusing his opponent by constantly switching his stance and being on the move catching Micky with quality counters. Shane Jones (WAL) v Callum Stuart (SCO) - Scotland Win 3-0 Callum was put on the back foot straight away but kept his distance well catching Shane as he was moving in with some solid back hands. This allowed Callum to then push forward on occasions with good sharp straight shots finishing with the hook. Shane pressed for the full three rounds never giving Callum time for a breather but it was Callum that finished the stronger in a great contest. Dylan Williams (WAL) v William Stuart (SCO) - Scotland Win 3-0 Dylan Williams ran out of his corner unleashing an explosive attack after attack. William found it hard to find any room to work and had to defend the Welsh mans aggressive start. The second round started the same but William started slipping his shots and catching his opponent with hurtful body shots and left hooks. Knowing he needed the last round it was the Scotsman on the front foot dominating every exchange - a great win in a tough contest. James Price (WAL) v Stephen Newns (SCO) - Scotland Win 3-0 Stephen took the centre of the ring straight away not letting the Welsh lad, landing effective sharp jabs and back hands. It wasnt long till Stephen took the front foot boxing at distance and moving off after his attacks resulting in a controlled bout start to finish. Gary Ryan (WAL) v Daniel Allan (SCO) - Scotland Win 3-0 Daniel started the aggressor pushing his opponent back on the ropes time and time again. This set the tone for the rest of bout with Daniel pressing all the time, coming of the best in every exchange. Daniels use of feints and good footwork resulted in many quality shots being landed and Daniel won boxer of the tournament. Kyran Jones (WAL) v William Hutchinson (SCO) - Scotland Win 3-0 William controlled the bout from the off against his experienced opponent, doubling up his attacks with great success and landing some hurtful shots. William showcased his skills with a great variation of punches throughout the bout and ended up a convincing winner. Lewis Tenby (WAL) v Mohammad Menskini (SCO) - Scotland Win 3-0 Mohammad and Lewis met each other in the centre of the ring exchanging some big shots. Mohammads hand speed and footwork was key in this contest with Lewis loading with every shot. However, the Scotsman kept it smart and boxed his way to a good victory. Kane Shepherd (WAL) v Lee McGregor (SCO) - Scotland Win 3-0 Lee and Kane took a while to figure each other out with the welsh man countering well. Lee stepped it up in the second and third with 2-3 phased attacks and good movement which led to Lee having the last word in every exchange to the end of the bout. Sam Parry (WAL) v Ukasha Farooq (SCO) - Scotland Win 3-0 Kasha never gave Sam an inch in this bout and constantly caught his opponent with hooks and uppercuts. He moved round his opponent and switching the attack well winning comfortably with a unanimous decision. Joseph Egan (WAL) v John Docherty (SCO) - Scotland Win tko 1 John started quickly hurting his opponent in the first exchange. There was no relenting and John then landed a thunderous overhand left giving his opponent an 8 count. John then let another sustained attack go giving the referee no option but to stop the bout in the first round. Team Scotlands Daniel Allan was voted best boxer on the evening for his performance against Gary Ryan and Team Scotland was the resounding winner of the Howard Winstone cup with a near whitewash score of 10-1. A fantastic performance and well done all our boxers and coaches.
