A tech tip for today comes from a reader/ member in Mississippi...... Anyone who owns a laptop knows that you get ONE charging chord, and if something happens to it, such as the dog eating it or the transformer (the boxy part of the chord) shorting out, know that replacing the charger can be just as expensive as the computer itself; and thats if you can get one. Not to worry though, we here at the Academy Of Redneck Technology have you covered.... First, let me explain the basics of what is going on with your transformer. A transformers basic job is to take what is unuseable and make it useable. For instance, most (if not nearly all) electronics devices (computer/ laptops/ TVs/ Cellphones) use small amounts of DC current to run, yet you plug them into the wall where large amounts of AC current is waiting, so you will need something to bridge the gap. For simplistic sakes, I will just point out that the transformer steps down the big amount to the small amount, and a RECTIFIER (not to be discussed at this time) changes it from Ac to DC so your computer is happy. When your charger goes out, it will be because the Transformer/ Rectifier (the box part) burnt up due to heat (That is a normal occurrence that will happen at some point), or you had some damage to the outside (ie... My dog ate my charger), you may choose to replace the charger rather then replace the whole computer. But you may be asking yourself, How is this done?. There are several replacement chargers on the market but let us explain how to find the right one. All chargers will have the specks listed on a label of some sort that states the input and output voltages, as well as output amps (current). Yo need to find a replacement charger that matches those specifics, then we need to do some thinking about how you will make the repair. Follow along with us, and you may choose to tweek it a bit to suit your needs. ...... *********Disclaimer, Disclaimer, Disclaimer...... None of the steps shown are to be preformed with the charger plugged INTO the wall, Doing so can result in electric shock. If you end up shocked, it will be because you were stupid. Dont be stupid.*********
