A thing I find comical. People always cite the price of mining in Appalachia being more expensive than out west as one of the reasons mining is ending in this area. (Which is one of the factors) However, they also use those numbers to show how the death of the mining industry has nothing to do with environmental regulations. The problem with saying this is the cost of environmental regulations (reclamation, water testing that is stricter and more elaborate in Appalachia, bat studies, other permitting processes etc. etc.) are factored into the numbers to determine average cost to mine per ton. So environmental regulations are directly related to high cost to mine. Its like saying the problem with that basketball player isnt that he cant play defense, his problem is his +/- ratio (points he scores minus points the guy he is guarding scores) is too low or in the negatives. HIS DEFENSE IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS HIS +/- IS SO LOW!!
