A thought for Veterans Day You will hear the word Hero a great deal tomorrow These are my thoughts. What is a hero? Is a man that puts himself into situations to be a “Hero” A firefighter is he a hero because he has a job that requires that he runs into a structure when most are inclined to leave, Hero, or just doing the job he or she was trained for. What about the policemen that gets shot in the line of duty a hero or simply an unfortunate situation. The military man; that in today’s military service; is a volunteer. If he saves lives of his comrades in arms and is killed or perhaps an errant shot or roadside bomb takes his life, we like to refer to them as heroes. Are they? What about their loved ones waiting at home? Are they not to be considered for the sacrifices they make every day he or she is deployed? I have watched several Medals of Honor medals awarded to servicemen and I do not recall a single one of them that said that he did not deserve the honor it belonged to his entire squad or unit. What about the common man or woman, which gets up and goes to work every day, and comes home and is supportive of his or her spouse and children and does so year in and year out. To me I think of all of them as dedicated and good people but not heroes. I feel that the terminology is over used and detracts from the true hero’s No, I think of a hero as someone untrained and not in a position to help or protect people a hero. The passer bye that catches a child that has fallen from a window or someone that pulls a person out of a fiery wreck. I use as an example my own father that was on the front lines for a full year during WWII, he seldom spoke of the battles and the fear that can shake a man until he cannot function. He won the bronze star for saving his entire platoon and in the process he took out a machine gun nest. He did not speak of it. Later in his tour he was promoted to sergeant in the field. I asked him why he said “he was the only one left”. Was he a hero he would have said no, he was just doing his job and trying to stay alive. To me he was a hero because he put it behind him and raised a family and always was helping others. There are curse words that are used so much they lose their shock value. If you are talking to someone that swears as in a normal conversation it has no effect. But if someone swears seldom and they say G—D----it you take notice don’t you. Thus it is the same with the term HERO it causes us to be desensitized and loses its true meaning. Tomorrow is Veterans Day I for one will always be thankful to the men and women that serve or had served they are due our respect. To them I say thank you to my Father and Uncles that went to war and the ones that never came home. I thank my great Grandfather who fought in the civil war and a grandfather eleven generations back Nathanael Green tht fought next to George Washington in the revolutionary war. Thank You All
