A thoughtful observation from Glenn Alexander Whenever I - TopicsExpress

A thoughtful observation from Glenn Alexander Whenever I comment on a Facebook post with an animal liberation message, speciesists inevitably try to make the conversation about themselves, their diets, their personal choices, etc. When I refuse to comply with this change of topic and bring it back to what the animals deserve, it clearly frustrates them and they are much less able to come up with face-saving responses like stop forcing your beliefs on me, etc. This, I think, can serve as a lesson for the importance of how we frame the conversation. Even if you want other people to go vegan, starting the conversation with a focus on them and their consumer choices with a message like Go vegan shifts the conversation exactly how they want it. If youre just some person telling them what to do, youre easy to dismiss. If youre someone speaking up for the rights of others, youre a lot harder to dismiss. So next time youre engaging in conversation with someone, try beginning it with a discussion of the *systemic* problem of animal exploitation; not the *individual* problem of what that person purchases. Once youve gotten them on board that the problem exists, THEN offer them veganism as a necessary step toward resolving that problem.
