A throwback/confession memory combo inspired by seeing SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE here at Signature. Im being put in for what will be the last leg of the Off-Broadway production of TICK TICK BOOM. Im learning the score and all the blocking. We get to the diner sequence, and the song, SUNDAY. The song, I am told, is a direct parody of Sondheims song from S.I.T.P.W.G. I nodded and was like, oh sure I get it. I mean I understood what the conceit was, but, TRUTH: I had never heard the song, nor did I even know the show. (what.). And not only that, not once did I ever even listen to it! to see HOW our show was parodying it. I was too busy learning all the hand gestures and INCREDIBLY intricate choreo and synchronized movement. In essence, not knowing the song, or the context of it in Sondheims show, I was unaware of the degree of the send up, and what it was exactly saying about the Johnathan character. You can imagine when, finally learning that song myself a year later in a room at the Kennedy Center, with all the actors of the festival to present it in the concert standing in a line side by side at Avery Fischer Hall, how EVERYTHING FINALLY FELL INTO PLACE. I was sitting in my chair but having all these late revelations…OhhhhHHHHHHHH!!! so THATS what he….! Just…LATE. But further embarrassing, it would still be till the production that only just closed at Signature that I would FINALLY Actually See The Show. I feel like the Musical Theatre Gods have forgiven me. Hey; Better Late Than Never. Joey Mac and I doing Green Green Dress. https://youtube/watch?v=fx2-fNxZ5QY
