A tiny bit of faith is restored tonight. I had prepared for a different conversation with my students, but in light of the grand jurys decision and the riots in Ferguson, we had a real conversation. Where we discussed the issues and arguments and rebuttals and ethos and evidence and agency and why all of the above and so much more matters to all of us. We took a break halfway through the three hour course, and my students were still engaging in conversation. They could have texted or Facebooked or relaxed after a rigorous debate. But they continued the conversation. And later we ended the conversation understanding that another life is lost. That the conversation doesnt end when the class ends or when the media refocuses on the Kardashians. That a life was lost. This is complicated. And that what matters is that we can all leave the classroom still talking.
